Position Summary:

The Chief Investment Officer (CIO) will lead the firm’s CIO Team and drive the investment strategy of both the Family Office and Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) platforms. The Legacy Knight CIO function has historically been split among the firm’s partners and operated by committee. We seek to expand upon our previous efforts through this new role.

As CIO, this individual is responsible for developing the firm’s strategic and tactical asset allocations. The CIO will maintain strong manager relationships, source and implement investment strategies, perform due diligence, and monitor existing investments. In addition, the CIO and their team will be responsible for managing the firm’s client portfolios and ensuring alignment with each family’s Investment Policy Statements and long-term financial goals.

Aside from managing the firm’s client portfolios, the CIO will be responsible for providing written and verbal thought leadership to clients and internal partners. This may consist of white papers, short-form videos, webinars, blogs, and other content about current market trends and investment strategies.

Skills & Experience:
  • Leadership & Strategy:
    • Lead the Investment Team and contribute to the firm’s strategic vision.
    • Develop the firm’s “why” regarding how we invest.
    • Develop long-term strategic and tactical asset allocation.
    • Potential for an Investment Committee seat on day one, depending on tenure.
  • Investment Management:
    • Tailor the firm’s strategic and tactical asset allocation in the context of each family’s pre-existing positions and long-term goals.
    • Oversee portfolio performance and risk, ensuring it aligns with client objectives and risk tolerance.
    • Conduct due diligence on prospective investments across various asset classes.
    • Track client portfolios to ensure they adhere to the specific guidelines outlined in their Investment Policy Statements (IPS).
  • Platform Management
    • Oversee the firm’s investment platform, ensuring it remains robust, competitive, and aligned with the firm’s strategic goals.
    • Maintain strong relationships with managers across various asset classes and remain current on who is coming to market with a new fund or strategy, facilitating a constant robust investment pipeline.
    • Regularly review and update the investment platform to incorporate new opportunities and respond to market changes.
    • Communicate platform updates and performance to clients, the family office team, and other stakeholders.
  • Client Engagement:
    • Assist in creating and updating Investment Policy Statements for current and prospective clients.
    • Deliver clear communication on strategies, market conditions, and portfolio performance for current and prospective clients.
    • Engage with the family office team to remain current on any shifts in client near-term needs or long-term goals.
    • Periodically provide opinions and guidance on outside investments that clients would like help reviewing and deciding on.
    Communications & Thought Leadership:
    • Oversee all investment-related communications, ensuring consistency, clarity, and alignment with the firm’s brand and values.
    • Assist with writing and publishing thought pieces, white papers, and other materials on current market trends and investment strategies.
    • Present market insights and investment updates to clients and the family office team, reinforcing the firm’s expertise and thought leadership.
  • Team Management:
    • Lead, mentor, and develop the investment team, fostering a high-performance culture.
    • Ensure the team is well-equipped to execute strategies and manage client portfolios across public and private markets.
  • Risk Management & Compliance:
    • Implement robust risk management practices and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Monitor market trends and adjust strategies to mitigate risks as needed.
Qualifications & Experience
  • 10+ years in investment management, ideally with a family office, RIA, asset manager, broker-dealer, foundation, or endowment.
  • Expertise in global markets, focusing on both public and private markets.
  • Track record of constructing and risk-managing multi-asset class portfolios.
  • Deep knowledge of private markets and private investment asset classes.
  • Strong understanding of global financial markets, economic trends, and the ability to anticipate and respond to market shifts.
  • Ability to think strategically and innovate in developing investment solutions that meet the evolving needs of the family office.
  • Strong communication skills for articulating the firm’s views and investment strategies to clients and internal partners.
